About Morgan Stanley Investment Bank

About Morgan Stanley (Investment Banking M&A – Early 2025)

Morgan Stanley operates one of the world’s most prestigious and influential M&A advisory franchises, consistently positioned at the pinnacle of the global investment banking industry. As of early 2025, the firm provides elite-level strategic counsel to a premier global client base, encompassing leading multinational corporations, major financial institutions, top-tier financial sponsors, and governments.

Renowned for its intellectual capital, deep industry specialization (with standout strengths in Technology, Healthcare, Financial Institutions, and Industrials), extensive global reach, and flawless execution capabilities, Morgan Stanley excels in advising on the largest, most complex, and strategically critical M&A transactions.

This includes leading roles in landmark cross-border mergers, sophisticated defense advisory against hostile bids and shareholder activism, and complex spin-offs/divestitures. M&A advisory is a core pillar of its Institutional Securities Group, emphasizing long-term C-suite relationships and delivering bespoke, high-value strategic solutions.

Rankings (2024 & Early 2025)

Morgan Stanley consistently occupies the absolute top tier of global M&A league tables, typically competing for the leading positions.

  • Global: For the full year 2024, Morgan Stanley typically ranked within the Top 3 globally by announced M&A deal value, often vying for the #1 or #2 spot alongside rivals like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, according to major league table providers (LSEG, Bloomberg, Dealogic).
  • USA: The firm maintained its dominant M&A franchise in the critical US market, consistently ranking in the Top 3 throughout 2024, frequently securing the #1 or #2 position.
  • Europe: Morgan Stanley possesses a powerful European M&A practice, usually ranking within the Top 3 to Top 5 advisors in the region during 2024.
  • Asia Pacific: Holds a significant and top-tier ranking in Asia Pacific, typically within the Top 5.

Early indications for 2025 show Morgan Stanley maintaining its elite market position, actively advising on major transactions as global M&A activity progresses.

Key Changes (2024 & Early 2025)

  • CEO Transition Impact: The most significant firm-wide change was Ted Pick assuming the role of CEO effective January 1, 2024. Pick’s extensive background leading the Institutional Securities Group (which includes Investment Banking and M&A) ensures deep understanding and continued strategic focus on this core business at the highest executive level. While this was a firm-wide transition, leadership within the day-to-day operations of the Investment Banking and M&A divisions saw relative stability among the most senior global and regional heads directly managing the franchise during 2024.
  • Continued Emphasis on Premier Advisory: Morgan Stanley reinforced its strategic commitment to its advisory-centric model throughout 2024, focusing on high-value, complex mandates rather than solely pursuing deal volume. Leveraging its global network and deep sector expertise remained paramount.
  • Strategic Talent Management: The firm continued its approach of cultivating internal talent while making highly selective, strategic external hires in key growth areas (e.g., technology, sustainability/energy transition, private capital advisory). This focus on targeted talent acquisition rather than large-scale team lifts or boutique acquisitions remains core.
  • No Major M&A-Related Acquisitions: Morgan Stanley did not undertake significant acquisitions specifically to bolster its M&A advisory platform during this period, relying on the strength of its established global franchise and organic growth initiatives.
  • Navigating Market Dynamics: Morgan Stanley expertly navigated the complex market conditions of 2024, advising clients through lingering macroeconomic uncertainty and positioning itself at the forefront of emerging M&A trends and the gradual recovery in larger transaction volumes.

About the Investment Banking Decks here

Investment banking presentations are rarely if ever, made public. When I was junior in M&A, it would have been so helpful to have access to see how banking decks were made and how other banks made them.

The issue is that they are never made available, so I set out to help you.

What you will find here

You will find 2-4 real M&A decks from one bank. They are in a fancy form of PDF you can open and go through (best on your computer). If you want to see more, there are options to purchase more access (which funds a little team of analysts to make updates).

If you want to see more, this is part of a collection of 67 free M&A presentations from the top 20 banks (based on ranking and also the quality of presentation for you to learn from).

Why the heck should you care?

Investment banks attracted the best and the brightest.

  • Slide structure/design: Learn how complicated concepts are structured and designed in PowerPoint
  • Analysis approach: See exactly how complex financial methods are presented
  • Strategy and communication: M&A deals are not (normally, other than many Duff and Phelps decks) cookie-cutter. There’s a host of topics that need to be dealt with
  • Morbid interest: I used to do this for a living, but it’s still interesting to see how PPT are made… but then maybe it’s just me and so FML 😉

Who this will help

  • You want to work in banking: There are a lot of applicants. Knowing the job helps you answer questions
  • You work in banking: Even if you’re an MD, you need to know how the best are structuring their thoughts/analysis
  • You write presentations: You can’t buy learnings like this. You can learn from the slides
  • You have a curious mind: Good for you
