The buck stops with you, and you need to have a handle on the big picture. Only we know that’s easier said than done. I typically work with the CEO (or cofounders when you’re earlier) to fix your business model, help you decide on strategic options (e.g. should you sell or raise?), and teach you how to raise, scale, or even fix bad culture.

I’m an entrepreneur. I know what being depressed and feeling helpless feels like. I’ve set up failed startups and scaled large ones. I also know intimately how investors work. I believe fake cheerleading doesn’t help, so I focus on genuinely helping you (even if you don’t want to hear the truth). When we work together, my sole goal is to consider how I can genuinely help you win. I know your budget is tight, so you will never get an upsell from me. I’ll also not end a call till I’m sure I’ve helped you with your core challenge.

  • Growth approach: Whether you bootstrap or raise, you have 95% of the same issues- the only difference is fundraising related.
  • Stage: I help from the idea stage to series-c. Beyond that, I can give advice on M&A and strategic options.
  • Challenges: I cover the ‘staying alive’ and ‘getting larger’ questions you face. I don’t teach you details such as how to optimise FB ads (you hire a specialist), but I can talk about whether your Go-To-Market strategy is viable and even dig into your metrics. I Help You Make Things Happen

If you’re a CFO of a growing startup, I typically help you deal with financial models, cap tables, doing deals, setting KPIs etc. Otherwise, I help leaders of startups critically review your challenges and help them think through your options to fix them. How I Can Help You

I know a lot about building startups because I’ve done it. From sales to customer care, running buying for e-commerce, CFO fun stuff, writing a culture code, HR, etc. I primarily focus on your high-level challenges because these are the things that you can’t Google. My expectation is that you are great at your job, you just need someone smart to debate the path forward and give you clarity.

  • Finance: I’m seriously good with Excel and I worked at Lazard FIG M&A so I know complicated. We can build a new model, review KPIs or set them, deal with metrics, debt and equity, you know the list is long.
  • HR: I’m definitely not Brenda in HR… I can teach you to fix culture, make a culture code, fire people at scale, and even do sneaky things to get competitor info. Dealing with firing a co-founder? Yes, I’ve done that too.
  • Operations: A colleague once called me a ‘machine’. I know how to set up operations from scratch and scale them up. I typically cover strategic topics, but I have the ability to answer details on much of operations. If we get too specific, I will advise you to find a consultant and make a plan for what needs to happen next.
  • Growth: Should you internalize? How do you make a growth plan after you just raised your Series-A? How do you align growth with fundraising? Your burn rate is critical, so we will start with that and your goals for your next round, then calibrate expansion plans between the two.

I Help You Invest Other People’s Money Better

I focus on emerging managers to teach them how to raise, develop portfolio strategies, how to get deal flow, and how to offer value add to startups. I also help hedge funds, property funds and others since a lot of the principals are the same, especially when it comes to making your pitch deck. As I’ve worked in financial M&A, VC, and as a founder I can offer differing perspectives to the same question.

How I Can Help You

There are a gazillion investors with more experience than I do. My difference is that I think about the process of investing more than most, and I regularly teach investors so I can explain things simply, focused on why X actually matters (not just academic BS).

  • Angles: If you’re looking to start investing, I’ll give you a crash course so you avoid a tonne of mistakes. I’ll teach you how to interview founders, what to look for in startups, and even how to offer value to build your brand
  • Emerging VCs: I primarily help first-time VCs. My advice is similar to angels. The difference is that I’ll give you a hard time. In around 3 hours I can get you to really critically review your investment thesis and how you are going to operate, as well as how to raise from LPs. I also help do pitch decks, so the process involves you critically analyzing a lot you definitely didn’t think through properly.
  • Established funds: I help you with doing your deck for the next fund, critiquing your investment thesis, how to get more deal flow, and how to offer scalable value add (through a platform, or not).
  • Alternative funds: I do very random calls with hedge funds, property etc. Typically, you are doing something new, launching a new fund, and you need someone who understands how institutional funds work and the startup world. I specialise in asset management M&A so I can have very technical calls.

I Help You Decide If You Want to Break Free and How

As a senior exec, you’re probably getting to the point you want to ‘self-actualise’. I teach you about setting life goals and ways you can interact with startups or whether to start your own. I’ll help acclimatise you to what the reality of a startup is and isn’t. If you have an idea, I’ll teach you how to validate it or tell you if it’s a terrible idea. Given my experience, I know how to talk with you and not down to you. My method is Socratic.

How I Can Help You

You make good money but you’re not happy. You’re also smart and will only tolerate someone who will genuinely not waste your time. If I don’t already have the answer, I know how to help you set out your options so you can make informed decisions. I treat you like an adult even though I normally get asked to explain things like they are a child once you trust I’m not full of BS.

  • Should you quit?: This is never the question you ask, but it’s the one you actually want to talk about. I always start at the basics to understand why you want to quit. I often teach you ways you can get the feeling you want without quitting

I work with financial advisors, lawyers, brokers, accountants etc. In some cases, I help you come up with solutions for your clients (You get the credit!) where you need specialized knowledge. I Lead the Call or You Have a Question List

I’m gifted at figuring out what your real issues are. Normally, you just say ‘Take charge’ and I’ll focus on what your core issues are you might not even be aware of. If you have a list of questions and want to rattle through them, we can do that too. It’s your call and I’m here to help

Can you guarantee you can help me?

I can’t remember ever having a call where the client wasn’t super happy. If you’re talking to me and believe I’m wasting your time, let’s end the call, and I’ll refund you. No stress.

Am I the only clueless one?

LOL. In my experience, totally not!

The things I specialise in used to freak me out. I had imposter syndrome for a long time.

The only reason I know more than you do is I blew up a lot of time learning for a number of years.

What do I have to do before a call?

You can rock up with a broad question. You can also come up with a list of questions you want to specifically discuss. If you want to show me things such as a model, pitch deck, sales material, website etc, I’m happy to review them in a screen share. It’s your time, so you decide how prepared you want to be.

What's used to do calls?

I use Zoom. You can dial in if you want, but it would be best if you can log in through the app so we can screen share (it’s very useful).

Can I use my corporate system to call?

Very occasionally, clients are forced to use teams or something to call for compliance reasons. If that is the case, just book as usual and email me the link you want to use before the call. I’m flexible.

Are calls recorded and can I have a copy?

Yes. I automatically record every call on Zoom unless you specifically ask me not to. In addition, I use a service to provide you with a transcription in case you want to read the call.

I delete recordings every few weeks to clear and save space on my drive. If you want a copy of the call so you don’t have to take notes, just let me know, and I’ll send you the file via WeTransfer after the call.

Do you do prep time before a call?

No. If you pay for an hour you have one hour of my undivided attention. If you want me to prep work then book additional time and make a note that you want me to spend an hour looking at your material, website, doing research etc.

Who do you not do calls with?

I do not work with snowflakes and people who generally take offence.

Do you sign NDAs?

NDAs are BS as no one ever gets sued on them. Never ask an investor for one.

Trust me, nothing you have is actually confidential, let alone interesting.

The only time I signed one for a good reason was when I was advising on an acquisition for a large exit.

It’s normally n00bs that ask this question.

I will sign only an NDA for a real reason.

Can you reschedule/cancel the call?

You can reschedule the call up to 24 hours in advance. I’m not dealing with people who cancel 10 minutes before the call.

It costs me money when you book a call. If you plan on cancelling, simply don’t book a call with me! I’m not interested in spending time refunding you etc.

Where are you based / what times are you available?

I’m currently living in Lisbon (Portugal). Most of my clients are in America and Canada though.

I am available between midday and midnight GMT.

Who do you work with?

I work with startup founders, investors, financial advisers, lawyers and others in the startup and investing world.

Most of my clients are in their 30-50s and have actually raised before. Of course, I do the ‘kids’ all the time too. It’s actually easier teaching a clean slate with an open mind.

Clients are from everywhere from the US to New Zealand, though most are in the US.

Is this confidential?

Yes, of course. I wouldn’t have a business if founders didn’t trust me.
