What
What is an OKR, PPP, KPI Tracker!?
The best way to plan and track your startup is with OKRs, PPPs and KPIs. Yes, those are a lot of acronyms! Don’t worry- I wrote a huge supporting blog you can learn from.
But let’s cover the three terms quickly:
- OKR: The system made famous first by Intel and made known by Google gets all staff to outline their major objectives and the quantifiable actions (i.e. key results) it’ll take to achieve them. This is a technique designed for accountability which is enforced with scores (Which we won’t do).
- KPI: Key Performance Indicators. They tell you how you’re doing with numbers. Or more specifically, they tell you if your startup is going to hit its targets and not go bust.
- PPP: Progress, Plans and Problems. It’s a really simple system used by startups large and small (From Skype to Seedcamp) to facilitate fantastic communication regarding what people are working on. Your daily startup standup is the same structure as your weekly PPP. What you did, what you’re going to do and where you have issues the team needs to help with.
There are fancy tools to manage these and more complicated systems, but this is designed to get you 80% of the benefit AND to be simple enough that staff will actually use this!
What I did was study OKRs, and what other useful tools startups use, simplify them, and put them into a Google Sheet that’s easy to use. And to make it more cool, I designed a way to automatically send updates from the sheet to managers each week!
99 Problems, Your Staff Management Shouldn’t Be One
unorganised
Tired of Your Team Not Being on the Same Page?
We’ve all been there: 1,000 things to do, new challenges every day as well as new opportunities!
That feeling of needing to move fast but not knowing if your team is on the same page as you with clarity on what they need to execute.
But this isn’t a hopeless situation: you just haven’t found the right tool for your business.
unaligned
Does Your Team Feel Unsure About the Company Goals and Their Contribution?
You left your job so you don’t have to be ‘corporate’ but that doesn’t mean everyone needs to be certain of their goals, how they contribute to the startup goals, and how they will be evaluated in future.
Staff hate to be micro-managed, but they also know they need to keep the team up to date… but fancy SaaS are a drag and with remote, start-up doesn’t always work.
tools for the job
The Problem Lies in Not Having the Right Tool
Goal setting, performance reviews, and general communication have been figured out already! It’s mainly organised for corporates, not startups though, because who has the time for BS, right?
What about a simple tool that does 80% of the good stuff without all the BS? Here you go!
Goals
It’s Worth Owning One Thing That’s Good Enough
This is made to work, not wow. It’s no frills and zero BS!
Staff Hate Reporting, So Make it Easy
- You need to create some reporting structure, but the thing is most staff hate doing so!
- As you are growing, communication between staff and teams becomes all the more important
- Rather than annoy them, let them do their planning and updates with a simple tool that they can do when they are good and ready!
Avoid Things Falling Through the Cracks
- Especially in a work remotely world, constant communication becomes all the more important
- Staff crave clarity on their role- be it what their targets are, KPIs their performance is judged against, and to report to their manager
- More than this though, staff need to know their work is contributing to the startup’s success. Are the objectives they set contributing to delivering results?
Small Startups Don’t Have an Easy to Use Tool
- There are paid SaaS around, but well, they cost $!
- The tools get feature bloat to justify higher fees
- Small startups need something simple
Save Time Figuring Out Management and Use This
- Don’t reinvent the wheel, and paying some fancy SaaS staff hate
- I’ve done the thinking so you don’t have to
- It’s easy to learn and use, so what are you waiting for?

I had never heard of OKP before getting Alex’s spreadsheet. It will be very useful. Everyone has tasks which can be tracked. That way, you can see who’s stuck in tar and who’s cruisin’. And the SaaS spreadsheet – it’s just magnificent. Worth its weight in Tylenol.

Stephen- ha, you crack me up. Sounds a bit too much like I paid you though. how much do I owe you? 😉
Sorry slow response, got the ol’COVID and lost track.
Let me know if there are new things I can make to help out.
