Boxcryptor Pitch Deck to Raise Seed Capital Investment

This is the pitch deck Boxcryptor used to raise undisclosed, mid six-digit seed capital investment from investors in 2011.

There is very little funding information about Boxcryptor but they were able to partner up with our investors from Agile Partners in May 2012 and my guess is their funding has been through internal rounds.

TechCrunch reports:

“BoxCryptor team told us that it quietly closed its first funding round at the beginning of May. While the company wouldn’t specify the exact amount of this round, it did note that it was a “mid six-digit amount.” The investors in this round are Jan Hichert, Markus Hennig and Gert Hansen, the founders of German security firm Astaro, which was acquired by Sophos last year.”

Pitch Deck Review Summary

It’s an ok deck. Nothing particularly impressive. The deck is probably good to get a baseline to understand what you need to do better.

Structured Summary Review

Words

There are not enough words to explain things properly and the words they have are not super compelling.

Slide length

The length is on the short end, though this is an early stage deck so the expectations are not super high. I would have some more slides.

Headers

There are terrible. They don’t even always have them.

Appearance

This is the basic level of design that you need. It would be nice to have more, but you don’t need a lot more.

Narrative

Eh, there isn’t really one since they don’t utilise the headers.

Structure

It’s a bit basic, though they do an ok job.

Slides

They don’t have any particularly smart slides. I want to know their market size, what their go-to-market strategy is etc. It’s very eh.

Boxcryptor Pitch Deck

The deck is basic and follows the fundamental tenets of best practice. It’s not bad but it doesn’t blow one’s mind.

You start with the team slide when the team are ballers. Where I put it is in the middle of the deck between the story part and the execution section.

All the founders say is that they have degrees and worked at a company or two.

They have team photos but don’t use PowerPoint design elements. Most are terrible. The bubble thing is not needed.

The charts are great, but there is no header. Delete the background image.

Is it an innovative product? It looks dull to me, but could be a timing thing.

Being featured in the news is a lame traction slide.

The tltles, when they have them are not great. There’s the foundation of something, but the slides is not great.

The xy competition slides are one of the two main competition slide types. I don’t get a feeling of differentiation.

The revenue slide is fine.

They seem to bounce around a bit. Here we have a traction slide which is ok. I want them to explain the takeaway.

Their use of funds is not that useful. These are some of the things a lot of founders struggle to explain. I focus on milestones.

The list of reasons to invest is lame. Obviously being able to speak German would help…

Don’t write a thanks slide. Do three reasons to invest.
