About the Investment Banking Decks here

Investment banking presentations are rarely if ever made public. When I was junior in M&A it would have been so helpful to have access to see how banking decks were made and how other banks made them.

The issue is they are never made available, so I set out to help you.

What you will find here

You will find 2-4 real M&A decks from one bank. They are in a fancy form of PDF you can open and go through (best on your computer). If you want to see more, there are options to purchase more access (which funds a little team of analysts to make updates).

If you want to see more, this is part of a collection of 67 free M&A presentations from the top 20 banks (based on ranking, and also the quality of presentation for you to learn from).

Legal notice for banks: No information is privately sourced and is protected by the Securities Exchange Act, 17 U.S.C. § 78ll (1) (D).

Why the heck should you care?

Investment banks (historically) attracted the best and the brightest.

  • Slide structure/design: Learn how complicated concepts are structured and designed in PowerPoint
  • Analysis approach: See exactly how complex financial methods are presented
  • Strategy and communication: M&A deals are not (normally, other than many Duff and Phelps decks) cookie cutter. There’s a host of topics that need to be dealt with
  • Morbid interest: I used to do this for a living, but it’s still interesting to see how PPT are made… but then maybe it’s just me and so FML 😉

Who this will help

  • You want to work in banking: There are a lot of applicants. Knowing the job helps you answer questions
  • You work in banking: Even if you’re an MD, you need to know how the best are structuring their thoughts/analysis
  • You write presentations: You can’t buy learnings like this. You can learn from the slides
  • You have a curious mind: Good for you

About Greenhill

Important Note: Greenhill & Co. was acquired by Mizuho Financial Group, with the deal closing in late 2023. It now operates as the M&A and restructuring advisory business within Mizuho’s global investment banking platform. This summary reflects its historical identity and its current status post-acquisition.

About Greenhill / Mizuho’s M&A Advisory (formerly Greenhill – Early 2025)

Historically, Greenhill & Co. was a prominent independent investment banking firm focused exclusively on providing M&A, restructuring, financing, and capital advisory services globally. Founded by Robert F. Greenhill, it operated with a conflict-free model, advising corporations, institutions, and governments on complex strategic transactions. Following its acquisition by Mizuho Financial Group, which closed in late 2023, the legacy Greenhill business now forms the core of Mizuho’s global M&A and restructuring advisory capabilities. As of early 2025, this unit continues to provide strategic advice, leveraging the historical Greenhill expertise and senior talent, but now operates with the backing and integration of Mizuho’s larger financial platform, including its balance sheet and broader capital markets capabilities.

Rankings (2024 & Early 2025)

Greenhill’s ranking profile has fundamentally changed due to the acquisition.

  • Historical Standalone: In the years leading up to the acquisition, Greenhill as a standalone entity typically ranked outside the Top 15 globally by announced M&A deal value but held a respected position among the established independent advisory firms. Its rankings often fluctuated based on involvement in specific large transactions.
  • Post-Acquisition (as part of Mizuho): Since the acquisition closed, Greenhill’s deal activity now contributes directly to Mizuho’s overall investment banking league table rankings. Greenhill as a separate name will likely fade from standalone league table prominence over time. The acquisition significantly boosted Mizuho’s M&A advisory ranking, lifting its position in global and regional tables throughout 2024 compared to its pre-acquisition standing. Mizuho, incorporating Greenhill’s contribution, now competes more visibly in the Top 15-20 global M&A rankings.

Key Changes (2024 & Early 2025)

  • Acquisition by Mizuho (Completed Late 2023): This is the defining change. Greenhill ceased to be an independent, publicly traded company and became a key part of Mizuho’s Banking division for the Americas.
  • Integration Process: Throughout 2024, significant effort was focused on integrating the Greenhill team and operations into Mizuho’s global investment banking platform. This involves aligning systems, processes, and leveraging cross-selling opportunities between legacy Greenhill advisory clients and Mizuho’s financing and capital markets products.
  • Leadership Integration: Scott L. Bok, the former CEO of Greenhill, became Chairman of M&A and Restructuring within Mizuho’s banking division, indicating continuity of leadership for the core advisory team under the new parent structure.
  • Shift from Pure Independence: The fundamental model shifted from pure, conflict-free advice to an advisory business operating within a large, full-service financial institution, albeit with efforts to maintain advisory integrity.
  • Access to Balance Sheet: The legacy Greenhill teams now have the ability to offer clients access to Mizuho’s balance sheet for financing solutions alongside advisory mandates, a significant change from the previous model.
  • Talent Retention & Synergies: A key focus for Mizuho throughout 2024 was retaining key Greenhill bankers and realizing the expected revenue synergies by combining Greenhill’s advisory strength with Mizuho’s financing capabilities and global network.
