About
nTopology is an engineering software company that allows engineers to consider design, simulation, and advanced manufacturing in one workflow. The company’s breakthrough computational engineering environment seamlessly combines synthesized geometry and simulation results in finely tuned manufacturing models. They building the next generation of engineering design tools for advanced manufacturing.
nTopology helps engineers create lightweight and optimized parts with their functional requirements built right in. The company launched nTop platform bringing to market capabilities that would complement existing CAD technologies. It also boasts tools that give the user precise control over spatial variations of shape, allowing for a wider spectrum of designs, and analysis and test results, so this data can be harnessed to design parts.
nTopology, founded in 2015, provides a platform for engineers and other end users to design a variety of often complex products for 3D printing and sells to major firms such as aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin.
The New York-based startup launched the latest version of its nTop platform at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the US and said it has seen a strong response from customers, even as many have been forced to lay off staff.
“Covid has accelerated a shift away from old school enterprise sales to bottoms up from users and engineers,” nTopology founder and CEO Brad Rothenberg told Business Insider in an interview. “We saw record revenues in Q1, beat that in Q2 and look set to do the same in Q3, the pandemic has sparked a platform shift as businesses look to the next generation of tools.”
Demand for the company’s fundraising was high, according to Rothenberg, with the startup completing the entire funding process remotely in around three weeks.
nTopology had originally looked to raise $30 million to scale its R&D and grow its sales and marketing operations globally but took in $40 million to help accelerate the process.
Insight Partners led the round alongside nTopology’s existing investors Root, Canaan, DCVC, and Haystack and takes its total funding to $67.6 million.
“Fundraising is usually a major time suck and a very lonely process driving between San Francisco and Sand Hill Road,” Rothenberg said, referring to an area commonly occupied by venture capitalists. “I have been close with Insight for a number of years and luckily had met 80% of our investors before but the remote process was great from my apartment and I’d like to not have to do a fundraise in person again.”
One application of nTopology’s platform during the pandemic was the rapid development of medical swabs for COVID-19 testing.
The company’s platform helped designers at San Francisco-based 3D production company Origin approve a nasopharyngeal swab model in two days to help meet a growing need for testing equipment.
