Gci Liberty, Inc

About

GCI Liberty, Inc. was a holding company that primarily owned and operated a range of communication businesses. Its main assets included GCI Holdings, LLC, which is Alaska’s largest communications provider. GCI Holdings offered data, wireless, video, voice, and managed services to both consumer and business customers across Alaska, even in some of the most remote and challenging conditions.

GCI Liberty also had interests in Charter Communications, Inc. and Liberty Broadband Corporation. This strategic position allowed the company to play a significant role in the telecommunications sector, particularly in regions with harsh climates and limited infrastructure.

In December 2020, GCI Liberty merged with Liberty Broadband Corporation. This merger was structured as a stock-for-stock transaction, resulting in each share of GCI Liberty’s common stock being converted into a portion of Liberty Broadband’s common stock. Consequently, GCI Liberty ceased to exist as an independent entity, and its stock was delisted from the Nasdaq.

Post-merger, Liberty Broadband’s assets included GCI Holdings, Skyhook, and a significant number of shares in Charter Communications. The merger was expected to unlock additional value and benefits for shareholders, driven by the synergies between the combined entities’ assets and operations.

Rue21, Inc.

About

Rue21, Inc., a retailer known for offering trendy apparel targeted at teens and young adults, has recently filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of all its 540 stores. This marks the third time the company has filed for bankruptcy, following previous filings in 2003 and 2017. The current bankruptcy is attributed to various factors, including the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifts in consumer shopping habits towards online platforms, and increased competition within the retail sector.

At its peak, Rue21 operated around 1,200 stores, but it struggled with high debt levels and underperforming retail locations. Despite efforts to restructure and reduce debt in the past, the company continued to face financial difficulties, leading to the decision to liquidate its assets and cease operations. The closure will affect approximately 4,900 employees.

The company’s financial woes and declining relevance among its target demographic have been significant challenges. The shift in consumer preferences and the rise of more engaging and cost-effective fashion platforms like Shein further exacerbated Rue21’s decline.

About Barclays Investment Bank

About Perella Weinberg Partners (Investment Banking M&A – Early 2025)

Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP) is a premier global independent investment banking advisory firm focused exclusively on providing strategic and financial advice. As of early 2025, the firm operates without the conflicts inherent in lending, trading, or underwriting, allowing for objective counsel to its clients. PWP advises a diverse range of clients, including large multinational corporations, financial sponsors, governments, and institutions, on complex M&A transactions, strategic partnerships, divestitures, restructuring, capital structure advisory, and shareholder engagement matters. Known for its high level of senior partner involvement, discretion, deep industry expertise, and ability to handle complex, often cross-border assignments, PWP has established itself as a trusted advisor on critical strategic decisions.

Rankings (2024 & Early 2025)

Perella Weinberg Partners holds a strong position within the independent advisory landscape and competes effectively on significant M&A mandates.

  • Global: For the full year 2024, PWP typically ranked within the Top 15 to Top 20 globally by announced M&A deal value, according to major league table providers. Importantly, it consistently placed among the Top 10 independent advisory firms globally.
  • USA: Maintained a solid US M&A practice, generally ranking within the Top 15 overall and within the Top 10 among independent advisors during 2024.
  • Europe: PWP has a significant European advisory presence, often ranking within the Top 15 to Top 20 advisors in the region during 2024, performing well among the independent peer group.
  • Restructuring: Possesses strong capabilities in financial restructuring advisory, complementing its M&A practice.

Early indications for 2025 suggest PWP continues to leverage its independent platform and senior relationships to advise on strategic transactions.

Key Changes (2024 & Early 2025)

  • Leadership Stability: The firm maintained stability at the top executive level, with Peter Weinberg continuing as CEO, providing strategic consistency built upon the founders’ vision.
  • Continued Strategic Hiring: A core element of PWP’s strategy involves the ongoing, selective recruitment of experienced Managing Directors and Partners from competitors across key industry sectors (e.g., Technology, Healthcare, Energy Transition, Industrials) and geographies. This targeted talent acquisition continued throughout 2024 and into early 2025 to bolster expertise and client coverage.
  • Reinforced Independent Model: PWP remained committed to its conflict-free, advisory-only business model, emphasizing bespoke strategic advice.
  • Organic Growth Focus: The firm’s expansion primarily relied on organic growth driven by market share gains and strategic hires, rather than through large-scale acquisitions of other advisory firms during this period.
  • Market Adaptation: PWP navigated the evolving market conditions of 2024 by focusing on complex strategic situations where its independent advice is highly valued, including carve-outs, cross-border transactions, and advising financial sponsors and corporations on navigating economic uncertainty.

About the Investment Banking Decks here

Investment banking presentations are rarely if ever, made public. When I was junior in M&A, it would have been so helpful to have access to see how banking decks were made and how other banks made them.

The issue is that they are never made available, so I set out to help you.

What you will find here

You will find 2-4 real M&A decks from one bank. They are in a fancy form of PDF you can open and go through (best on your computer). If you want to see more, there are options to purchase more access (which funds a little team of analysts to make updates).

If you want to see more, this is part of a collection of 67 free M&A presentations from the top 20 banks (based on ranking and also the quality of presentation for you to learn from).

Why the heck should you care?

Investment banks attracted the best and the brightest.

  • Slide structure/design: Learn how complicated concepts are structured and designed in PowerPoint
  • Analysis approach: See exactly how complex financial methods are presented
  • Strategy and communication: M&A deals are not (normally, other than many Duff and Phelps decks) cookie-cutter. There’s a host of topics that need to be dealt with
  • Morbid interest: I used to do this for a living, but it’s still interesting to see how PPT are made… but then maybe it’s just me and so FML 😉

Who this will help

  • You want to work in banking: There are a lot of applicants. Knowing the job helps you answer questions
  • You work in banking: Even if you’re an MD, you need to know how the best are structuring their thoughts/analysis
  • You write presentations: You can’t buy learnings like this. You can learn from the slides
  • You have a curious mind: Good for you
