Introduction to the Fertility Challenge
Mother’s Day this year was amazing, but back in 2005 we had hit rock bottom; we had just experienced our fourth miscarriage and were heartbroken.
The IUI procedure didn’t take and we were out of pocket more than $25k on our credit cards and in despair. Luckily the 5th try was a charm, but that journey of getting pregnant was one of the most challenging things we’ve been through as a married couple.
The Growing Issue of Fertility in the United States
And we’re not alone: the numbers are staggering. 1 in 8 couples in the US (7.3m women) who are trying to get pregnant today are experiencing fertility issues.
And, according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, for the first time ever, women in their 30s are having more children than those in their 20s.
As more couples choose to have children in their 30s and face almost no coverage, fertility is on track to be the biggest health expense for millennials.
The High Cost of Fertility Treatments
The solutions designed to help women and couples through these fertility issues are only designed for the top 1%.
Treatments typically cost $10k to $50k+, are largely paid for out of pocket, with limited coverage by insurance, and underserved by a fragmented market of private clinics.
