Our Investment in Gixo

Physical fitness is vital to leading a healthy life. Unfortunately, many of us put off daily exercise, citing reasons like the lack of time, money, or motivation.

This is is why I’m excited Selina Tobaccowala and Al Lieb are launching Gixo to help tackle the barriers of physical activity and improve overall health.

Community-based Workout Experience

We are excited to invest in Gixo because the foundational DNA of the team and product. First, Gixo was created with the idea of community in mind.

The team purpose-built the product to make the workout experience more community-based, collaborative and enjoyable.

Products that have strong network effects will accrue value for users over time and scale into impactful and enduring companies.

Gixo has community woven into its DNA — within the app, people can call, text and send emojis to one another during workouts while working out to the DJ curated playlist.

Personalized Fitness Experience

Moreover, Gixo was designed to be a more personalized experience than you can get through a gym memberships, and offers unlimited studio-quality classes for a low monthly price.

Hiring a personal trainer is the most effective method of working out because it results in a high level of accountability, both in showing up and in the productivity of the workout itself, but it’s prohibitively expensive for most people

Because Gixo doesn’t have the cost structure of a high-end studio or gym — and uses technology to create a highly personalized experience for their users — Gixo offers a great user experience at a mass-market price point.

In a nutshell, Gixo is the only fitness app that provides a motivating community experience with unlimited, personalized training at the cost of a mid-range gym membership.

Experienced Entrepreneurial Team

Co-founders Selina Tobaccowala (CEO) and Al Lieb are world class entrepreneurs with deep understanding of building consumer products for mass markets and proven success in scaling technology companies.

Our history with Selina and Al goes back to 1998 when Greylock invested in Evite, which quickly became the leader in online party planning service.

(Who hasn’t received an Evite to party in the past year?) Selina then went on to become President and CTO of SurveyMonkey, where she was responsible for all products sold through its self-serve sales channel, and led marketing, growth, product, and engineering.

Al co-founded ClearSlide, another Greylock portfolio company, where he was the founding CEO and remains on the board.

Conclusion

I am thrilled that Greylock led the Series A funding in Gixo, and that I have joined the board.

Selina and Al are special entrepreneurs, and I am happy to be a part of their journey. I anticipate that Gixo will add to my own exercise when I travel.
